Frequently asked questions
Do you offer bespoke or custom pieces?
Yes. Many of our pieces are made to order. Bespoke work begins with a conversation about use, size, material, and environment, allowing the design to respond naturally to your needs.
I’m nervous to order bespoke work online—how does this usually work?
That’s completely understandable. Every piece is shaped through conversation and collaboration. We take time to understand your space, needs, and expectations, and we keep you updated throughout the making process so there are no surprises.
How long does a custom piece take to make?
Lead times vary by piece and material availability, but most bespoke work takes 2–4 weeks to craft, followed by delivery. We’ll always confirm timelines before work begins.
Where are your pieces made?
All Salt & Sawdust pieces are designed and handcrafted by hand in our Cape Town workshop.
We primarily work with reclaimed and responsibly sourced timber, chosen for character, strength, and longevity. Each piece will naturally vary based on the wood used.
Can I choose the size or finish?
Yes. Where appropriate, sizes, finishes, and certain details can be tailored. We’ll guide you toward choices that suit both the material and the piece's intended use.
How does payment work for custom pieces?
Bespoke pieces require payment upfront, as materials are sourced and work begins specifically for your order. This ensures integrity on both sides and enables the process to proceed without delay.
Will my piece look exactly like the photos?
Each piece is one-of-a-kind. Variations in grain, tone, and texture are natural characteristics of solid wood and are part of what makes the work unique.
What if I’m not sure what I need yet?
That’s perfectly fine. You’re welcome to get in touch even if you’re still exploring ideas. We’re happy to guide you through the process and help clarify what might work best.
If you value patience, material honesty, and thoughtful design, you’re in the right place.
