Our Process
A considered way of making
At Salt & Sawdust, process is not a checklist.
It is the work itself.
Every piece we make is shaped by patience, restraint, and respect for material. We work slowly, intentionally, and by hand—allowing timber, light, and use to guide the final form. This approach is influenced by traditional Japanese craft principles, where reduction, attention, and quiet discipline lead to enduring design.
What follows is not a production line, but a way of working.
Crafted for those who know
We do not design for trends or mass appeal.
We design for those who understand that time is part of the object.
Each Salt & Sawdust piece is made for people who value material honesty, subtlety, and longevity—those who recognise that quality is often quiet, and that the most considered objects reveal themselves slowly.
Our work rewards attention. It is felt in weight, balance, finish, and proportion rather than ornament or excess.
Back to the grain
We work primarily with reclaimed and responsibly sourced timber, selected for its character rather than its uniformity.
Knots, grain shifts, tonal variation, and signs of previous life are not treated as flaws to be removed. They are preserved as part of the material’s story. This approach allows each piece to remain individual—shaped not only by the maker’s hand, but by the history of the wood itself.
Before any design decisions are made, the timber is studied. Its structure, movement, and limitations inform what it will become. The material leads. The design responds.
Thoughtful by design
Every piece begins with a question, not a trend.
How will it be used?
Where will it live?
What does it need to hold—practically and emotionally?
Design at Salt & Sawdust is an exercise in reduction. Forms are refined until only what is necessary remains. Nothing is added without reason. Nothing is left unresolved.
This process results in objects that feel balanced, calm, and quietly confident—pieces that belong naturally within a space rather than competing for attention.
Made in our workshop
All Salt & Sawdust pieces are designed and handcrafted in our Cape Town workshop.
From the first cut to the final finish, the process remains hands-on and deliberate. There is no outsourcing, no automation, and no rush to completion. This allows for presence at every stage—and ensures the integrity of the work is carried through from start to finish.
Care, precision, and repetition guide the making. Each joint, surface, and edge is considered not only for appearance but also for longevity and usability.
A quiet collaboration
Bespoke work is not a transaction; it is a conversation.
We take time to understand how a piece will be used, where it will live, and how it needs to function within its environment. This dialogue informs scale, proportion, material choice, and finish.
Rather than imposing a fixed aesthetic, we work collaboratively—allowing client needs and material behaviour to shape the outcome. The result is work that feels personal without being prescriptive.
Light, ritual, and atmosphere
Light plays a central role in our process.
More than illumination, light shapes how a space feels. It creates atmosphere, rhythm, and a sense of calm. When paired with timber, particularly reclaimed wood with depth and variation, light becomes part of the object’s character.
Our lighting pieces are designed to support everyday rituals: evening conversations, shared meals, quiet moments at the end of the day. They are functional first, atmospheric always.
Made to be lived with
Salt & Sawdust pieces are not made to remain untouched.
They are designed to be used, worn in, and lived with, gathering character rather than losing it. Over time, surfaces soften, timber deepens, and objects become more personal through daily interaction.
This philosophy values longevity over perfection, and presence over polish. The work is finished carefully, but never frozen in time.
Why our process matters
A considered process creates clarity.
It allows materials to speak.
It allows objects to endure.
It allows spaces to feel settled rather than styled.
At Salt & Sawdust, process is our signature—not because it is visible, but because it is felt.
