Sands & Shadows: The Gordon’s Bay Sconce

The second chapter in the story of a single, massive 25kg driftwood log, this wall-mounted light is a study in balance. After uncovering the hidden fire of the "Veins of Gordon’s Bay" lamp, I chose to split a section of that same 3.2-meter timber to create two distinct halves. This piece, the first wall light born in my workshop, is the result of that delicate transformation.

The timber did not disappoint. When cleaned and oiled, the wood surrendered the same deep, rich reds and dark, flowing veins that define this series. While the original design leaned toward an exposed bulb, a chance find in an antique store shifted the narrative: a vintage white glass conical shade with a chrome fitting.

The chrome, once touched by rust, was meticulously overhauled and restored, creating a striking dialogue between industrial history and coastal weathered timber. I carefully positioned the shade to act as a focal point, ensuring it illuminates the room without overshadowing the natural grain and soul of the wood behind it. The result is a piece of sophistication rooted in authenticity, a subtle, grounding presence for any wall it calls home.
