Hidden within a 3.2-meter driftwood log found on the shores of Gordon’s Bay was a secret waiting to be told. This massive gift from the ocean, weathered and heavy with the weight of the sea, was marked by a deep, natural fracture at one end.
What began as a significant crack became the gateway to a remarkable discovery. As the timber was cleaned and prepared, a breathtaking palette of rich reds and striking black veins emerged from the heart of the wood. This lamp is part of an exclusive series born from that single, storied log, a piece that celebrates the transition from raw coastal debris to refined interior centerpiece.
The craftsmanship is a study in material honesty. To bridge the timber and hold the pieces together for their new journey, I utilized traditional joinery: a robust mortise and tenon joint on the main body, paired with a tusk tenon and tapered wedge on the finer element. Visible and intentional, these joints ensure the piece remains as solid as the history it carries.
When illuminated, the lamp casts a soft, golden light that falls directly into what was once the hidden grain of the crack. It doesn’t just provide light; it commands the space, inviting you to appreciate the beauty of imperfection and the flow of nature.
